SC Chief Justice Renato Corona impeachment case complaint

More than 170 members of the House of Representatives (Congressmen) have signed the impeachment complaint or case against Chief Justice Renato Corona on Monday.

There are 8 grounds cited for the said case, which include his midnight appointment by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as Chief Justice; his track record marked by partiality and subservience in cases involving the Arroyo administration; failure to disclose to the public his Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth; etc.

Congress would reportedly transmit the case to the Senate either Monday or Tuesday. After an impeachment trial in the Senate, a two-thirds vote or 16 senators are needed in order to remove Corona from office.

Kakusa Party-List Rep. Ranulfo Canonigo Ambushed

Kakusa party-list Representative Ranulfo Canonigo was reportedly shot outside his house by a still unidentified man Sunday afternoon in Marikina City.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is now in a stable condition. Canonigo is on his second term as the party-list representative of Kakusa or Kapatiran Ng Mga Nakulong Na Walang Sala, which supports innocent people who have been incarcerated, helps victims of injustice fight for their rights, and is for the reform of the penal system.

Sen. Miriam Santiago elected as International Criminal Court (ICC) judge

Sen. Miriam Santiago became the first female from a developing Asian country to win a seat as a judge in the International Criminal Court (ICC).

She got 79 votes in the first round of the election, which automatically got her one of the 6 seats. She is set to take her oath as an ICC judge in March 2012, a post that has a 9-year term. She will eventually have to resign from the Senate to fullfill her new role.

“I will remain as senator until the ICC calls me to report for duty. I still want to play an active role in the impeachment case [of SC CJ Renato Corona],” Santiago tweeted.
