The camp of Bro. Eddie Villanueva is open to endorsing another presidential candidate if there's very little chance of him winning in the May 10 polls, according to a member of his Jesus Is Lord (JIL) religious group.
Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward Hagedorn, who is supporting JIL founder Villanueva, said there's talk the TV evangelist may just endorse another bet if he sees that he won't be able to win the presidency in his second attempt.
"May mga ganoong usapan. Pero siyempre, lahat naman ng kampo, nakikipag usap din kay Bro. Eddie. Maraming puwede pang mangyari. Medyo very fluid pa yung takbo ng ating sitwasyon ngayon," Hagedorn said.
Hagedorn issued the statement in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan where his friend, former President Joseph Estrada, was campaigning with his party mates in the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP).
Despite their current political differences, Hagedorn said he has kept his close ties with Estrada. "Ang atin namang pagkakaibigan hindi naman masisira yan sa pulitika lang e," he said.
Hagedorn alleged that the camp of Sen. Manny Villar was one of the groups said to be in talks with Villanueva, who is running under Bangon Pilipinas.
Bro. Eddie denies claim
Villanueva, however, ruled out the possibility of him backing out of the race.
"Sino nakaisip ng propaganda na yan?" he said, laughing. "Ni wala sa guni-guni namin yan e."
Villanueva, who was campaigning in Bicol on Wednesday, said that aside from JIL, he is also being supported by the Philippines for Jesus Movement, a global coalition of Christian churches, and other like-minded groups.
Villanueva also ran in the 2004 presidential elections and came last among 5 presidential candidates.
His campaign hasn't taken off as well this year. The February 24-28, 2010 Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed him getting only 3% support, good for only 5th place among 9 presidential candidates.
Estrada wants JIL's support
Estrada expressed hope that he would be the one endorsed by Villanueva in case he withdraws from the race.
He said the JIL has 2 million followers, which would boost his presidential campaign.
Estrada has placed 3rd in the recent presidential surveys of Pulse Asia and SWS behind front runners Sen. Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino III of the Liberal Party and Sen. Manny Villar of the Nacionalista Party.
He has recovered in the recent surveys, especially in Mindanao. "Siyempre, marami namang followers si Bro. Eddie," he said.
Estrada said he and Villanueva both want to fight corruption.

Bro. Eddie: Evangelist presidential bet vows ‘zero corruption’
Promising “six years of zero corruption” if elected, evangelist-turned-presidential candidate Eduardo “Brother Eddie” Villanueva led his Bangon Pilipinas party proclamation rally at the historic Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila on Saturday.
The proclamation rally was preceded by a motorcade participated in by about 1,000 vehicles that started from the People Power Monument along Edsa, Quezon City at 6 a.m..
The motorcade traversed the highway up to Monumento in Caloocan City, briefly stopping at the monument of Philippine Revolution leader Andres Bonifacio before heading to Quiapo.
Traffic was jammed on the Lawton-bound lane of Quezon Boulevard because of the many vehicles parked there. Despite the heat of the sun, some supporters, who all came in yellow “Eddie Tayo!” shirts, stayed in the middle of the plaza in front of the Quiapo Church using their own umbrellas during the five-hour program that started about 9 a.m.
A huge tarpaulin on the covered makeshift stage proclaimed the party's slogan, “Ibalik ang dangal! Anim na taong walang korapsyon (Restore our pride! Zero corruption for six years) with blown-up pictures of Villanueva, running mate and former securities and exchange chief Perfecto Yasay Jr. and their six senatorial candidates.
Before taking the stage, Villanueva told reporters that they chose to start their proclamation rally at the People Power Monument as Bangon Pilipinas' way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1986 People Power revolution that ended the 20-year Marcos dictatorship.
Villanueva, the founder of the Jesus is Lord Church, added they chose Plaza Miranda, site of the bombing of the 1971 Liberal Party campaign rally that preceded the imposition of martial law in 1972, because it has always served as “a symbol of public opinion historically.”
“EDSA revolution brought back democracy. But sadly it did not bring back righteous governance,” said Villanueva, who described himself as a radical activist during the Marcos regime.
“People power is not merely an occasion that is celebrated every year. The essence of People Power is the empowerment of every Filipino in a democratic environment. With this power, the Philippines can liberate itself from the shackles of corruption and rise again,” he went on.
He thanked Bangon Pilipinas' supporters for the “show of force,” expressing his surprise at the turnout at the motorcade.
“The show of force is a clear statement of Filipinos who are tired of traditional politics. I challenge every Filipino who loves God and country to remember our history. We are a nation of heroes. Let us become heroes again. The answer to the nation’s woes is in your hands,” he said.
“Under our Constitution, People Power is recognized. But for nine years (under the Arroyo administration) we restrained ourself from staging People Power. We waited for the May 10 elections to bring back real change,” said Villanueva.
His senatorial candidates are Dr. Zafrullah Alonto, lawyers Reynaldo Princesa and Ramoncito Ocampo, broadcast journalists Kata Inocencio and Alex Tinsay, Count Habib Adz Nikabulin, and educator Dr. Israel Virgines.
Villanueva ran for the first time in 2004 when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo won her presidential bid. The 2004 victory of Arroyo -- who was first catapulted to Malacañang in the 2001 EDSA revolt that ousted Joseph Estrada from the presidency -- was disputed a year after when tapes of Arroyo’s conversations with an elections commission official surfaced. Arroyo later apologized for her lapse of judgment but insisted she did not mean to ask the official to cheat for her, but was just following up the status of her vote count.

Bro. Eddie Villanueva Starts Campaign at Luneta
Christian evangelist Eduardo “Brother Eddie” Villanueva kicked off his second quest for the presidency at Luneta Park in Manila with an unfurling of one of the biggest Philippine flags ever made.
Villanueva, head of the Jesus is Lord Church, led other Bangon Pilipinas party candidates and about 5,000 supporters in unfurling the 180 x 92-meter flag.
First displayed in 2006, the 3.8-ton flag was created by businesswoman Grace Gupana, a supporter of Bangon Pilipinas.
Gupana’s group, PG Tower Ministries International, attempted on Sept. 16, 2006, to clinch the record for the world’s biggest flag. The group failed because strong winds tore apart the giant Philippine flag as it was being unfurled in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya.
Washing of feet
“We want to revive genuine patriotism and nationalism. We need new politics with moral leadership for a new, better Philippines,” Villanueva later told reporters.
During the rally, Villanueva also performed the “washing of the feet” on his running mate Perfecto Yasay Jr. and seven senatorial candidates.
Christ once washed the feet of his disciples to demonstrate how it is to be a servant-leader, according to the Bible.
Zero corruption
Unlike in the 2004 presidential campaign when he ran without a slate, Villanueva has a running mate and seven senatorial candidates—Zafrullah Alonto, lawyer Reynaldo Princesa, lawyer Ramoncito Ocampo, broadcast journalists Kata Inocencio and Alex Tinsay, Adz Nikabulin and Israel Virgines.
Villanueva said his slate would run on the platform of “six years of zero corruption.”
His team chose to start the official campaign at Luneta Park to signal the “hope for a new Philippines” since the national park is regarded as “Kilometer Zero,” he said.
In the country, all distances from Manila starts its reference to the kilometer marker in the flagpole beside the Rizal Monument where national hero Jose Rizal was shot by a firing squad in 1896.
Political discrimination
Villanueva told reporters that the political rally in the park nearly did not push through because of “political discrimination” under the Arroyo administration.
Bangon Pilipinas organizers were preparing for a proclamation rally cum “show of force” on Feb. 13 on the Luneta grounds to accommodate the expected massive turnout of supporters.
But the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC), an agency under the Department of Tourism in charge of Luneta Park, turned down Bangon Pilipinas' request, saying the park should not be used for “politically related rallies.”
“In line with our thrust in maintaining security and the safety of the public, we regret to inform you we don't allow politically related rallies here in Luneta Park,” executive director Salome Habal wrote Bangon Pilipinas on Feb. 4.
Patriotic rally
But ironically when Bangon Pilipinas made another request for the use of Luneta Park on Feb. 9—the official start of the national campaign period—this time saying it would be for a “patriotic rally” where they would unfurl the biggest Philippine flag made on record, the NPDC agreed.
Organizers said they were only able to inform their supporters of the change of date on Saturday.
“We would have wanted to hold a proclamation rally on Feb. 13 but it was canceled. The (Luneta Park) staff said ‘Ma'am got angry because it might become a political rally,’” Villanueva told reporters.
“But of course it's a political gathering. Why do they have to prevent the use of Luneta Park? Are they afraid to see that we can fill Luneta Park and disprove what the (pre-election) surveys say?” he added.
Villanueva has been at the tail end of pre-election surveys in a field of 10 presidential candidates.
Yasay said the group would question the constitutionality of Luneta Park's policy against political rallies. “(Luneta Park) was used before in political rallies. We feel very strongly this is a political discrimination, so our party can not show its strength in winning the elections,” he said.
Princesa said the group would file a petition for injunction before a trial court to stop the NPDC policy.
“We'll test the constitutionality of a state-compelling interest against freedom of speech and assembly,” he said.
Princesa said that a political rally was held at Luneta Park in 2004, and that former President Corazon Aquino led an anti-Marcos rally there to launch her civil disobedience campaign after the 1986 snap election.
