Arroyo seeks to spend holidays in QC home

The camp of former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will file next week their request for a temporary furlough for the former President for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Arroyo's spokesperson Elena Bautista-Horn said the appeal for a holiday furlough involves the former president's temporary stay in her La Vista home in Quezon City.

“We are going to request the court to maybe allow her to go home for Christmas and New Year and we hope the court will give that due consideration. I don’t know if its just the days or from-to,” Horn told ANC’s “Dateline Philippines” on Saturday.

Horn said they are preparing motions asking the Pasay Regional Trial Court to reconsider some restrictions it imposed on Arroyo's stay at the government hospital, including daily visits to the hospital chapel and the use of cellphones and laptops.

“She’s not convicted, so bakit naman ganito ‘yung treatment? It’s the freedom of movement para hindi siya makatakas, makaalis. But all other liberties must be restored. She can’t even go to the chapel to pray, that's freedom of religion and even that’s being curtailed,” she said.

Horn said the Pampanga congresswoman hopes the court allows her to communicate with her constituents and discharge her duties as an elected official.

She added that the former President has started writing a book and has asked for an electric typewriter.

The Arroyo camp also plans to appeal the strict 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. visiting hours at the hospital.

“Right now they’re allowing us to visit only from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. They said we have to visiting hours of the hospital but I think our lawyers are also considering raising this up to the court kasi wala na nga siyang TV, radio, laptop at cellphone, eh may distrito siyang aalagaan pa,” Horn said.

A new team of doctors from the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) conducted a complete medical check-up on Mrs. Arroyo Saturday morning to assess her general condition.

Without a court order, Mrs. Arroyo is not allowed to consult with her doctors in St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig.

VMMC Director Nona Legaspi said medical bulletins will not be issued unless with permission from the court.

Mrs. Arroyo was transferred to the VMMC from St. Luke’s last Friday.

Medical check-up

Mrs. Arroyo underwent a series of medical checks at the VMMC on Saturday.

Two female doctors from VMMC were assigned to be her attending physicians: Dr. Victoria Javier, who specializes in infectious diseases and Dr. Martha Nucum, a specialist of emergency medicine.

Veteran's hospital administrators said no medical bulletins would be released to the media without the court's approval.

Security at the government hospital is very tight even stricter it seems in the presidential suite where cellphones, laptops, radios and TVs are not allowed.

Aside from her lawyers and immediate family, who were granted free access, only a few are allowed to visit the Pampanga representative.
