Arroyo orders Lakas to rally behind Gibo

In a show of solidarity, Lakas-Kampi-CMD executive officials on Tuesday said they will rally behind their standard-bearer Gilbert Teodoro Jr. and ensure his victory in the May 2010 elections, upon the orders of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Lakas held an executive committee meeting at the Linden Suites on April 6 to "iron out administrative problems" and to elect new officers to vacant party posts.

The ruling administration party had recently lost key members to the Nacionalista Party, whose standard-bearer is billionaire Sen. Manuel Villar Jr.

They also became the subject of political intrigues stemming from an alleged "secret alliance" between Arroyo and Villar--a rumor that Lakas officials strongly denied.

Tuesday's meeting marked the first time since Lakas-Kampi-CMD's merger that President Arroyo attended an executive committee meeting.

Asked if she gave instructions to her party, she told media: "I did not give instructions. It's all political."

However, Lakas-Kampi-CMD Vice President Prospero Pichay said Arroyo, before leaving the meeting early, told officials to campaign for Teodoro.

"The order of the president is to campaign solidly behind Gilbert Teodoro, Edu Manzano, and the 6 senatorial candidates and governors and congressmen," Pichay said.

Earlier on Tuesday, at least 25 Lakas-Kampi-CMD's League of Governors met at the Discovery Suites to reiterate their support for Teodoro. Only half of the total 51 Lakas governors attended the meeting.

"There are a lot of them over there, united and they are one in moving for the election of Gibo Teodoro for president and vice president Edu Manzano and our senatorial candidates. And so we are one. Lakas-Kampi-CMD is solid," said the party's acting chairperson Amelita Villarosa.

Teodoro had earlier resigned as chairperson to focus on his campaign.
