Up to 8 senatorial bets to be proclaimed Saturday-Comelec

“Candidates be ready.”

This was the advice of Commission on Elections Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal to senatorial candidates leading in the partial, official tally of the poll body acting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC).

“To all the candidates, be ready tomorrow that we might make an announcement on the proclamation of some six or eight winners for senator,” Larrazabal told reporters in a chance interview at the Philippine International Convention Center the national canvassing is being conducted.

In a separate interview, Comelec Chairman Jose Melo said that they would likely proclaim from eight to 10 senators.

Larrazabal said that the NBOC would convene 10 a.m. Saturday and would make the proclamation in the afternoon.

When asked if the top eight candidates have secured their spots, Larazzabal said: “They know their standing.”

“I think the gap naman in the bottom portion onwards up to 20, parang malaki na yung gap nila, hindi [it looks like their gap is wide, not] by the thousands but by the hundreds of thousands na [already], I think that should be enough na [already],” he added.

As of 11:12 a.m. Friday, reelectionist Senator Ramon Revilla, Jr. is still leading in the tallies with 15,064,835 followed by Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada with 14,598,398 votes.

The top eight are:
1. Bong Revilla, Ramon Jr. - 15,064,835
2. Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada - 14,598,398
3. Defensor Santiago, Miriam - 13,335,800
4. Drilon, Franklin - 12,375,507
5. Enrile, Juan Ponce - 12,187,170
6. Cayetano, Pilar Juliana - 10,631,671
7. Marcos, Ferdinand Jr. - 10,050,605
8. Recto, Ralph - 9,814,356

The latest numbers are based on 84 out of the 274 total certificates of canvass submitted by the provincial boards of canvassers to the NBOC.

The Comelec reported delays in the national canvassing due to glitches in the machines and the declaration of failure of elections in some parts.

“We will see how we can speed it up but there is a process that has to be followed. It really depends as soon as we get the remaining certificates of canvass, then we can proclaim the remaining winning candidates for senators,” Larrazabal said when asked when the remaining four senatorial winners will be proclaimed.

“This would be the fastest proclamation of winning senatorial candidates,” Larrazabal said nevertheless.

Meanwhile, partylist winners won’t be proclaimed yet since not all CoCs have been received by the NBOC.

“We have to wait for everything to come in… because you need to get all the votes for the partylist to enable yourself to do the computation,” Larrazabal said.

Partylist groups have to get at least two percent of the votes of their members to get seats in the House of Representatives.
