Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Jolts Samar and Leyte on January 17

A strong quake shook some parts of Leyte and Samar at around 8:55 PM on January 17, 2012. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake registered magnitude 5.9 at a depth of only 25 km.

Intensity V was felt in Salcedo, Borongan and Guiuan, Eastern Samar; Intensity IV was recorded in Tacloban, Palo and Tolosa, Leyte; Catbalogan, Samar; Dolores and San Policarpo, Eastern Samar, and some parts experiencing minor shakes.

No reported damage has been posted yet but the chance on landslides in the current weather conditions is “very high”.
