It's not just in the surveys. Even in the World Wide Web, Liberal Party standard bearer Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Nacionalista Party standard bearer Manuel "Manny" Villar are neck and neck in online mindshare over the past year.
Data from Google Insights for Search, a public trends tool, showed that on average, Aquino topped online searches in Google Philippines over the past 12 months.
Users in Metro Manila, however, showed more interest in Villar than the LP standard bearer.
Coming in at third place is Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential bet Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro, followed by former president Joseph "Erap" Estrada and Bagumbayan party's Richard "Dick" Gordon.
Aquino and Villar also topped Internet searches over the past year, followed closely by Teodoro. Google Philippines said curious Filipinos went online to find out more information as these candidates made positive and negative waves as reported by the media.
As early as August 2009, Google Philippines said that Filipinos have been searching about "Philippine elections" through the Internet. As May 10 drew near, the elections became top of mind for Filipinos nearly every day.
"Several search spikes corresponded to related issues, such as the announcement of candidacies by presidential hopefuls, the beginning of the election and campaign periods, the gun ban, and the beginning of overseas absentee voting, each of which served to increase the overall number of searches for election-related news," Google Philippines said.
