Noynoy Aquino admits pitching for Iglesia vote with sisters

Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III on Saturday confirmed that he had met with Iglesia Ni Cristo Executive Minister Ka Eduardo Manalo three times over the last four months with his sisters.

Aquino said there were at least three big groups that would announce their support for his candidacy but he refused to say if the INC was among them.

The other groups rumored to be supporting Aquino were the Kingdom of Jesus Christ—Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy is expected to announce his candidate today—and the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines.

“I think it is best that these organizations themselves announce their support for a candidacy. I don’t want to be presumptuous. Every organized bloc helps us in delivering our message to the people. There are 50 million voters and about 40 million are expected to vote, it makes the job much easier,” Aquino said when asked to confirm whether he had bagged the bloc-voting religious group.

He said he met with Manalo recently at the INC central office complex in Quezon City with his sisters where he explained the nuances and substance of his platform. He and his sisters also thanked Manalo for the INC’s prayers when their mother, Corazon Aquino, was hospitalized and when she passed away last year.

Aquino also confirmed that the wife of former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., Gina, who is seeking her husband’s seat in Congress, had endorsed his candidacy in the fourth district of this province.

Although he ranked low on the list of preferred candidates of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Aquino remained confident of getting the group’s support.

”I haven’t had a chance to talk to any of the higher officials at the CBCP but I am sure we have a lot of supporters there who took time out to study my positions on various matters,” he said.
